Investigating Potential Causes for the Prediction of Spurious Magnetopause Crossings at Geosynchronous Orbit in MHD Simulations

During intense geomagnetic storms, the magnetopause can move in as far geosynchronous orbit, leaving satellites that orbit out magnetosheath. Spacecraft operators turn to numerical models predict response of solar wind conditions, but predictions are not always accurate. This study investigates four storms with a crossing by at least one GOES satellite, using magnetohydrodynamic NASA's Community Coordinated Modeling Center simulate events, and analyzes results investigate reasons for errors predictions. Two main explain most erroneous First, input simulations often contains features measured near L1 point did eventually arrive Earth; incorrect during such periods due rather than themselves. Second, while do well when primary driver motion is variation density, they tend overpredict or underpredict integrated Birkeland currents their effects times strong negative interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) Bz, leading poorer prediction capability.
